It's time to throw away your Thinkpad T20

Comments

have you been looking at my desk? You describe my laptop exactly. The T20 was a great unit but now only 98SE will run on it. Even Linux is dead slow. It is on my list to update although I don"t use it much so it is a low priority at the moment. unfortuantely we don't have laptops as cheap as you mention, not much under $A1000.
[this is good]

ACTUALLY YES ! (if you've ever posted a picture of your desk to any flickr desktop groups !)

However please don't throw it away if you already have 128M+ you could replace W98 with XUBUNTU or gNewSense and still use it for Firefox (with Flash & Java) & Thunderbird. OpenOffice.Org works but is a bit too slow for everyday use !

In fact almost any W98 PC with 128M+ can be effectively re-purposed using XUBUNTU or gNewSense
Speaking about Thinkpad, it belongs to Lenovo, which is based in China, right ? Anybody knows about its performance ?
Basically though, I don't like previous Thinkpads (and current Thinkpads too, I think) because they use a red button in the middle as the mouse.
Might switch to be an Apple user soon.
OO works fine under W98 with 128, just a little slow to load, same for the GIMP. Older versions of Ubuntu and Mepis worked fine even the LiveCD versions (except for wifi but that improved in newer versions). HDD are now available for around $1 per gig which is the price of desktop drives 12 months ago so an upgrade is possible. Heard good about Xubuntu but haven't tried it yet.
My T20 is an old IBM unit but now they are made by Lenovo but serviced (at least in Australia) by IBM and the reports are quality is just as good.

I thought the same about the mouse / joystick thingy until I used one. Found is just as good as a touchpad. If you get a chance have a go with one you might be surprised.

Yes IBM sold the Thinkpad to Lenovo a few years ago. The T20 is branded IBM.

XUBUNTU is great because it uses XFCE instead of Ubuntu's Gnome and therefore saves between 50M-100M of memory which is great if you only have a total of 128M !
I finally did something about my Thinkpad see Techodyssey for the story.
Congratulations on installing Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn. I would definitely recommend trying Xubuntu as well you'll get great speed improvements due to reduced memory requirements
