Ubuntu Hardy Delivered by rPath

The alpha release of Ubuntu Delivered by rPath is now available as a platform selection on rBuilder Online.

Create the appliance using the latest version of Ubuntu Delivered by rPath.

Goto the rBuilder Online's web interface:

Click "Create /Edit product version"
Select "Ubuntu Hardy Delivered by rPath" from the drop down menu

Note that as part of taking Ubuntu Delivered by rPath beyond its current alpha status, we have been making changes to our infrastructure to better support this platform. Because of the nature of these changes, updates to existing appliances based on Ubuntu Delivered by rPath will fail and need to be rebuilt and redeployed.

Pardus 2008 Turkish GNU/Linux distro

The Pardus 2008 Turkish GNU/Linux distro is even better than the 2007 version and very different from many other GNU/Linux distros ! This is not just because it is from Turkey and has a Turkish focus but also because it uses ÇOMAR, YALI, PiSi, zorg and comes with (real) Sun Java 1.6.0 pre-installed ! Already there are 100+ (160MB+) of automatic update packages that you can download including a kernel update from 2.6.25.9 to 2.6.25.14 !

And it displays a very cute pussy cat animation while you are downloading updates !

Pardus the Turkish GNU/Linux distribution

Pardus is a Turkish GNU/Linux distro.

Pardus aims to

provide full Turkish support by making the character structure compatible to Turkish (UTF-8 compatibility) and by making all the messages and documents visible to users into Turkish.
ensure that it is an operating system which can be installed and used more easily than the existing Linux distributions and other competitive operating systems.
to be designed in a modular configuration which can achieve the required flexibility and high performance with a task-based and human-focused approach rather than a tool-based and technology-based one.

OpenSolaris 2008.05 for x86 is available to use free of charge and we can send you a CD at no extra cost.

The delivery time may vary depending on your location, so you should consider downloading the CD image if you have a fast Internet connection.

The OpenSolaris 2008.05 Live CD makes it simple to boot to a fully functional desktop environment, including Firefox and Thunderbird, without the need to install onto your system. After familiarizing yourself with the OpenSolaris environment, you can then choose to install it onto your disk.

Once installed, you can connect to the OpenSolaris Package Repository to install additional software at OpenOffice.org

Ubuntu, Gobuntu and gNewSense

The new "Free software only" installation option in the normal Ubuntu (press F6 in the boot menu twice) basically achieves what Gobuntu is aiming for, as long as the general goal of having "clean" main and universe repositories is fulfilled (which is goal of the Ubuntu as a whole).

Given that many goals Gobuntu has are goals of Ubuntu in general also, and the fact that gNewSense is anyway doing the work that can also benefit Ubuntu (knowledge of problematic packages), the mission of Gobuntu is a bit up in the air.

The "current and future" thread on this list has got me thinking. 
Perhaps we really are on the wrong track, that the only way to meet the 
needs of the gNewSense folks is to have completely different source 
packages to Ubuntu. If that is the case, then I think it would be better 
to channel the energy from Gobuntu into gNewSense.

ADIOS GNU/Linux pre-installed operating system

The objective of the ADIOS project is to quickly and easily download a consistent operating system environment onto laboratory PCs. The ADIOS environment provides students with administrative privileges required to perform advanced exercises in Network and Systems Administration.

We needed a way to download a pre-installed version of the operating system onto the PC in the laboratory. There are many tools available to do this, but the ADIOS project uses a web server to deliver the Operating System images.

The ADIOS setup image is used to install operating systems onto disk partitions. It also copies the OS images from disk to disk to reduce network traffic. The ADIOS image was ported onto CDROM for students to use at home.

ADIOS-SELinux is a separate boot CD for running NSA Security Enhanced Linux. Additional software is available on the DVD version of ADIOS.

The process involves installing a Java runtime environment and some additional libraries for compatibility.
