The new "Free software only" installation option in the normal Ubuntu (press F6 in the boot menu twice) basically achieves what Gobuntu is aiming for, as long as the general goal of having "clean" main and universe repositories is fulfilled (which is goal of the Ubuntu as a whole).
Given that many goals Gobuntu has are goals of Ubuntu in
general also, and the fact that
gNewSense
is anyway doing the work that can also benefit Ubuntu (knowledge of
problematic packages), the mission of Gobuntu is a bit up in the air.
Mark Shuttleworth on Rethinking Gobuntu
The "current and future" thread on this list has got me thinking.
Perhaps we really are on the wrong track, that the only way to meet the
needs of the gNewSense folks is to have completely different source
packages to Ubuntu. If that is the case, then I think it would be better
to channel the energy from Gobuntu into gNewSense.
ohloh have just introduced a new concept of open source software "stacks" which are collections of your favorite free libre open software grouped into functional collections for example for "desktop", "server", "PBX" etc.
You should be able to see the stacks I've created FSSE (server), OSDE (desktop) , VOIP & VIZZ (virtualisation)
@ http://www.ohloh.net/accounts/3283/stacks ! or read more @ http://www.ohloh.net/wiki/stack_faq
What's in your favorite ohloh "stack" ?

Open Source Software (apart from Red Hat & Ubuntu !) suffers from a massive lack of marketing ! For example I've been using Parallels Plesk and WHM/Cpanel for managing webhosting for many years without even realising there alternatives such as the lightweight LxLabs LxAdmin and the Open Source Webmin VirtualMin !
Well that changes today ! I will be giving Webmin VirtualMin a try and hope it lives up to its promises ! BUT hang on a mo ! They aren't making any "marketing" promises ! So how can they fail to live up to them ?
