The new "Free software only" installation option in the normal Ubuntu (press F6 in the boot menu twice) basically achieves what Gobuntu is aiming for, as long as the general goal of having "clean" main and universe repositories is fulfilled (which is goal of the Ubuntu as a whole).
Given that many goals Gobuntu has are goals of Ubuntu in
general also, and the fact that
gNewSense
is anyway doing the work that can also benefit Ubuntu (knowledge of
problematic packages), the mission of Gobuntu is a bit up in the air.
Mark Shuttleworth on Rethinking Gobuntu
The "current and future" thread on this list has got me thinking.
Perhaps we really are on the wrong track, that the only way to meet the
needs of the gNewSense folks is to have completely different source
packages to Ubuntu. If that is the case, then I think it would be better
to channel the energy from Gobuntu into gNewSense.
I have just tried CentOS 5 and am a bit disappointed
- The LIVE-CD gives me a blank screen on my IBM Thinkpad
- The INSTALL-DVD still doesn't have a graphical installer
- I asked for a desktop build and (unless I misread something) its only created a root user and I first have to log in as that
I'm afraid I'm going to stick with gNewSense & Xubuntu for the moment at least for my desktops and notebooks !
Now Google Desktop and Google Earth are both available for GNU/Linux !
IBM Thinkpad running gNewSense and VMware Server
gNewSense is derived from Ubuntu, and thus has most of the same functionality.
There are a number of differences though.
- Firmware removed from kernel in main*
- Builder, a tool to produce a distribution
- Restricted removed
- Ubuntu logos replaced
- Universe enabled by default
- emacs, bsdgames, nethack and build-essential part of the default install
Note the goal is to produce a fully free distribution, not to have as many features as possible.
Ubuntu 6.06
breaks after running update manager !
and
Ubuntu 7.04
is broken from the beginning!
- cannot install on 800x600 screen
- disk partitioner refuses to overwrite debian partition
- WiFi is broken (duplicate adapters and neither works)
- USB mouse becomes dead paperweight after just three minutes
- VMware Server 1.0.3 does not install (even if you download all of the dozens of fixs and patches available on the web)
Ubuntu 6.06
It is impossible to install or remove any software.
Please use the package manager "Synaptic" or run "sudo apt-get install -f" in a terminal to fix this issue at first.
Does this help ?
# apt-get install -f
